I trained as a philosopher and historian of science at the universities of Berlin (Free University), Toronto, Jyvaskyla, Helsinki, and Oulu (Finland).
1989: PhD "Language as Calculus v Language as Universal Medium" (Supervisor: Jaakko Hintikka)
1993-1997: Lecturer, later Reader, in the Science Studies Unit of the University of Edinburgh
1997-2009: Lecturer, later Reader, and since 2003 Professor, in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge;
2009-: Professor for Applied Theory of Science and Epistemology, University of Vienna (and Affiliated Research Scholar in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge)
