I trained as a philosopher and historian of science at the universities of Berlin (Free University), Toronto, Jyvaskyla, Helsinki, and Oulu (Finland).
1989: PhD "Language as Calculus v Language as Universal Medium" (Supervisor: Jaakko Hintikka)
1993-1997: Lecturer, later Reader, in the Science Studies Unit of the University of Edinburgh
1996-1997: Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow at the Max-Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich (in the research group of Gerd Gigerenzer)
1997-2009: Lecturer, later Reader, and from 2003 Professor, in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge
2001-2002: Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin
2008-: Elected Member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters
2008-2009: Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Helsinki Centre for Advanced Studies
2009-: Professor for Applied Theory of Science and Epistemology, University of Vienna (and Affiliated Research Scholar in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge)
